Yellow-rumped Warbler

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Manitoba

(Setophaga coronate)

The Yellow-rumped warbler is a small, insect-eating woodland songbird. The yellow-rumped warbler prefers mature coniferous and mixed wood forests with plantings of birch, aspen, willow, maple, and oak.

The birds are widespread across North America and are not presently requiring conservation efforts as the population, while waning somewhat in the boreal plains area, is not currently at risk.

In Manitoba, the best sites for seeing these birds are within regions with coniferous forests in the boreal plains and boreal forest regions. Sitings are most common in Whiteshell Provincial Park (PP), Birds Hill PP, interlake region of Hecla/Grindstone PP, western Manitoba in Riding Mountain National Park, Spruce Woods, Turtle Mountains, Duck Mountain PP, and Grass River PP.

Nesting Habitat of the Yellow-rumped Warbler

Yellow-rumped warblers typically build their nests of twigs, pine needles, grasses, and small plant roots. Nests are frequently located on the horizontal branches of conifers, or on oak, birch, and maple trees. The birds line their nests with animal hair and soft feathers, with the edges of the lining sometimes curling over the eggs. The nest takes about 10 days to build and the eggs hatch within 12 to 13 days of being laid. As with many nestlings, the birds are naked and vulnerable at the time of hatching, but they grow rapidly. Young birds usually leave the nest at the two-week period.

The song of the yellow-rumped warbler is described as being trill-like, consisting of four to seven syllables*: tyew-tyew-tyew-tyew, tew-tew-tew with the occasional check or chip call note.

The photographs of the yellow-rumped warbler in the Cookie Buxton photo gallery were taken in the late fall in Birds Hill Provincial Park, north-east of the city of Winnipeg.
