Tropical Butterflies

Tropical butterflies are simply gorgeous. Seeing numerous species, in abundance, within an enclosed observation garden, watching them in motion among the tropical flowers and foliage, is a real privilege.

We visited the exhibit, Im Reich der Tropischen Schmetterlinge, at Rhododendon Park’s Das Grüne Science Center in Bremen, Germany (Tropical Butterfly Exhibit at Bremen’s Green Science Centre) in March 2013. Tropical butterflies were thriving indoors in the special tropical exhibition garden. Outside, in stark contrast, the day was cold and overcast, and the ground was covered in fresh snow.

It is thanks to dedicated efforts by supporters of the world’s precious botanical gardens and spectacular conservatories, and thanks to the experts who study exotic plant and animal collections, that plants and insects can survive in climate zones remote to their origins. These important indoor garden settings, whether temporary or permanent, help sustain, preserve, and showcase plants and insects from around the world. Such gardens provide a means for the general public to better understand and protect the world’s diverse, and increasingly threatened, life forms. These living collections are especially important in helping to protect against catastrophic loss of species in environments where the ability to sustain biodiversity may become compromised.

The specially designed indoor garden at the Green Science Center housed the tropical butterfly exhibit from September 2012 to March 2013. We had the good fortune to visit the display on March 10, 2013, which was the exhibit’s final day. The highlight for me was seeing the “big blue” tropical butterfly. What an absolutely gorgeous creature this is. My photographs do not do it justice. Nonetheless, I left the exhibit happy after eventually capturing a few images, reminding me how truly splendid it is to see such beautiful tropical butterflies alive and thriving in their custom-built “natural habitat. “

I photographed the tropical butterfly exhibition using my Canon EOS Rebel T3i (EFS 18-55 cm lens).
