Rhododendron Park, Bremen

While visiting Bremen, Germany in March 2013, I had the pleasure of visiting the Grünes Science-Center Botanika within the beautiful Rhododendron Park, Bremen. Rhododendron Park, situated on 46 hectares, contains Europe’s most comprehensive collection of rhododendrons, with over 450 varieties and 350 subspecies. Since our visit was in the early spring, we missed seeing the outdoor plants in bloom, but the photographs available online show how stunning the displays are in the later spring.

Visitors to the park can also view over 350 types of azalea and another 250 related evergreen species within the gardens.

We spent part of the afternoon discovering the exciting collections within the Green Science Center and its attached greenhouses, which feature plants typical of Japan, Borneo, and the Himalayas. A wide variety of rhododendrons were in bloom inside the conservatory. We were fortunately able to catch the final day of an exhibit of tropical butterflies. Some of my photographs of tropical butterflies are shown here on the Cookie Buxton site.
